SJV ARES Emergency Communications Preparedness in Bakersfield & Kern County

Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) teams across Bakersfield and Kern County play an indispensable role in disaster response and emergency communications. Operating under the San Joaquin Valley ARRL Section framework, local operators from the Kern County Central Valley Amateur Radio Club (W6LIE) and Sierra ARC (WA6YBN) maintain rapid-deployment HF/VHF stations. Kern County’s unique geography—spanning the Southern San Joaquin Valley floor, the rugged Tehachapi Mountains, and the Grapevine mountain pass along Interstate 5—presents complex RF propagation challenges. SJV ARES volunteers regularly participate in simulated emergency tests (SET), coordination drills with local emergency management agencies, and Winlink digital messaging over VARA HF. By establishing resilient backup communications independent of commercial cellular networks, Kern County operators ensure uninterrupted emergency message relay when severe weather or power outages impact the Valley.
